Healthy, Sustainable and Regenerative — A New Roof Landscape for the City of Minneapolis
A new, 2.5-acre vegetated roof was installed amidst the skyscrapers and tall buildings in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, last November — the Target Center arena now boasts the fifth largest green roof in the United States and is one of the dozen largest in the entire world. It was the first green roof installed on an arena in North America.

The landscaped portion of this roof relies on Sika Sarnafil’s G476 waterproofing membrane, while 28 smaller, non-vegetated roofs located on four different levels utilize the company’s G410 roofing membrane. The Target Center is home to the Minnesota Timberwolves professional basketball team and is owned by the city of Minneapolis.
The vegetated portion of the roof is designed to capture 0.9 inches of rain before run-off occurs, and is expected to prevent an estimated one million gallons of storm water from draining into the Mississippi River each year. Target Center will also be attracting more than just basketball fans — the vegetated system was designed to attract the Karner Blue Butterfly, an endangered species.
The Sika Sarnafil EnergySmart Roof® features a long-lasting, reflective vinyl membrane that deflects the sun’s rays and thus helps to minimize costs associated with the cooling of the facility. The vinyl membrane was used on the stadium’s enormous fixed dome and on several mid-level roofs, two low-level roofs, numerous clerestory roofs and two adjacent buildings.
INSPEC, Inc. acted as consultant to the project lead, Leo A. Daly Architects, for the green roof waterproofing system and also for the ancillary roofs. Both companies have offices in Minneapolis. Kestrel Design Group of Minneapolis was consultant for the roof vegetation system.
Stock Roofing Company of Minneapolis installed all of the roofing, totaling approximately 135,000 square feet. The company is an ‘Elite’ Sika Sarnafil contractor and is a part of the Tecta America Corporation.
This project garnered Second Place for INSPEC in Sika Sarnafil’s 2009 Consultant Project of the Year, and it resulted in a First Place finish for Stock Roofing in Sika Sarnafil’s 2009 Contractor Project of the Year.
