Roofing Trade Getting Attached to RhinoBond Alternative Canton,
Massachusetts. June 23, 2009 – Sika Sarnafil’s new alternative roofing membrane attachment system,
called RhinoBond, continues to gain in popularity as it helps to enhance installation productivity and
offer powerful protection against wind uplift.
RhinoBond
is a non-penetrating mechanical attachment system for thermoplastic roof membranes based on induction
welding technology. This all-in-one system utilizes a uniform pattern of attachment ‘plates’ to spread
wind load more evenly across roof surfaces, as opposed to relying exclusively on in-seam fastening.
This fastener spacing significantly limits membrane flutter, regardless of membrane width.
The
RhinoBond tool generates a safe electromagnetic pulse that heats specially-coated plates affixed to
the roof deck and welds them to the PVC roofing membrane. The process creates a strong bond between
the bottom side of the roofing membrane and the plate, without penetrating the membrane.
The
RhinoBond system uses the same fastener and plate to secure both the insulation and the membrane to
the deck. Traditional mechanically-attached roofing systems attach insulation and membrane to the deck
separately. The RhinoBond system thus results in a fastener reduction of 25 to 50 percent when compared
to these traditional fastening methods, depending on specific wind requirements.
A
Welcome Approach to Attachment RhinoBond has proven particularly effective for
metal retrofit applications. The RhinoBond plate and purlin fastener are installed into the purlin at
the rate required to meet the uplift force. The standard 10-foot wide membrane is then placed over the
attached insulation or coverboard and induction welded to the plates. With the RhinoBond system, there
is no need for special width membranes to match the purlin spacing.Mechanically-fastened thermoplastic
roofing systems are being viewed in a whole new light, thanks to the RhinoBond Attachment System. Roofing
professionals and building owners have welcomed this new and unique approach.
