Sika Sarnafil Introduces Roof Recycling Program
Canton, MA. February 21, 2008 – Sika Sarnafil, a leading manufacturer of thermoplastic roofing and waterproofing systems introduces a program for the recycling of older PVC roofing membranes that offers roofing contractors a financial incentive, and helps to minimize an industry-wide burden on the environment.

Sika Sarnafil has been involved in the recycling of vinyl roof membranes for more than 13 years, beginning in Europe in 1994. The company has diverted more than 8 million pounds of post-industrial material from landfills within the U.S. These materials were reprocessed and reintroduced into the manufacturing process for roofing and other products.

The technological and practical ability to recycle a material is an important factor in determining the sustainability of a building material. Recycling reduces the environmental impacts of producing new materials at the beginning of the lifecycle, and the burden on landfills at the end.

Sika Sarnafil recently conducted a pilot program for post-consumer recycling of older roofs and collected more than 800,000 square feet of vinyl roofing from facilities as diverse as the Marriott Long Wharf Hotel in Massachusetts, the Carver Hawkeye Sports Arena in Iowa, and various Target stores.

The usefulness of older vinyl membranes has the potential to save overburdened landfills from millions upon millions of square feet of waste. For the contractor, recycling saves money in tipping fees — these savings can offset the additional expenses associated with the proper removal and packing of the material.

In addition to the post-consumer recycling program, Sika Sarnafil recycles virtually all of its post-industrial waste back into roofing and waterproofing membranes.

Roofing contractors interested in participating in this program should contact their regional Sika Sarnafil sales representative, or contact Sika Sarnafil at their Massachusetts location, telephone number 800-451-2504.
