Sika Sarnafil Announces 2009 Roof Consultant Project of the Year
Winners Canton, MA – November 4, 2009 - Sika
Sarnafil announced winners of the second annual Sika Sarnafil Roof Consultant Project of the Year competition
today. First place was awarded to SRI Consultants, Inc., of Middleton, WI; second place to INSPEC, Inc.,
of Minneapolis, MN; and Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger of Los Angeles, California, won the third place
honor. The competition recognizes and celebrates excellence in roofing design.
“We
are proud to acknowledge the outstanding problem solving skills and overall excellence demonstrated
by these award winning project teams,” said Brian J. Whelan, Senior Vice President of Sika Sarnafil.
“Congratulations to the winners of 2009 Roof Consultant Project of the Year competition and to the building
owners who were provided with long-lasting roofing solutions.”
Sika Sarnafil
evaluated the competition entries and selected the winners based upon criteria that included creative
problem solving, project challenges, design solutions, and unique skills employed to ensure the success
of the project.
The winning entry from SRI Consultants involved the
roof rehabilitation of the Dane County Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum in Madison, WI. Persistent
snow accumulation on the roof and accompanying heat loss from the building led to a series of complex
problems that included extensive ice formation and leakage. SRI Consultants developed a comprehensive
system solution that included special heating and insulation components and robust roof membrane detailing
and securement using Sika Sarnafil’s S327 roof membrane.
INSPEC was
a key member of the design team responsible for the 2.5 acre green roof installed on the Target Center
arena in downtown Minneapolis — home to the Minnesota Timberwolves professional basketball
team. This green roof is the fifth largest in the U.S. and one of the dozen largest in the world.
Using Sika Sarnafil’s G476 single-ply waterproofing membrane, the team came up with a green roof
that weighed no more than the previous roof. INSPEC was also responsible for the rehabilitation
of 28 smaller, non-vegetated roofs at the arena, located on four different levels, and specified Sika
Sarnafil’s EnergySmart Roof membrane.
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger was
responsible for extensive exterior renovations to the Hollywood Palladium, a historic music, dance and
entertainment venue in Los Angeles, California. The company called for more than 60,000 square
feet of new roof to be installed over 16 adjacent roof areas, including a large barrel roof and curvilinear
canopy. Tan-colored EnergySmart Roof® membrane from Sika Sarnafil enabled the complex to maintain
its ‘historic’ look, while still meeting the state’s requirement for a ‘cool roof’ that conserves energy.
